1 FIGURE of a cupid with a shield surmounts the cover, the figure standing on a
V pedestal supported by three scrolled brackets and conventional curled foliage.
J The top of the cover is decorated with acanthus leaves, applied, and large plain
J V burnished bosses separated by cherubs’ faces and scrolls, small scrolled brackets
being affixed above the bosses. Applied on the edge are rosette and scrolled ornaments of a
conventional kind. The general form of the body bears some resemblance to the “aquileja,” and
is decorated with large plain bosses, separated by cherubs’ faces in relief, and terminal winged
figures, applied, while running round the body is a narrow band of ox heads and rosettes in
relief. The tall baluster stem is enriched with conventional curled foliage as on the top of the
cover, seven scrolled brackets are affixed to the heptagonal section of the stem, seven cupids’
heads with scrolls are applied to the centre, and below these are seven terminal and helmeted
figure brackets. The top of the pedestal is of heptagonal form with scrolled brackets applied
above seven large lobes. On the compressed sides of the pedestal are two varieties of scrolled
supports, one having masks. The border is embellished with large ovolo ornaments.

SURMOUNTING the cover is a figure of Fortune standing on a plain globe, which rests
among curled foliage, ungilt. The cover is embellished with large plain burnished bosses,
separated by flat scrolled strap-work; an open and ungilt cresting is on the border, which has
an ovolo edging. The lip of the cup is plain, while the general form of the body resembles the
above cup; the body is decorated with six cherubs’ heads in high relief and flat scrolled strap-
work. The ornate baluster stem is decorated at the top and bottom with curled foliage and
three small scrolled brackets, and is applied with three terminal figures, separated by grotesque
masks; three cherubs’ faces and wings are applied on the lower part of the stem. The high base
resembles the body in outline, when inverted, and is embellished with two rows of plain bur-
nished bosses, separated by flat scrolled strap-work. Applied on the edge are six cherubs’ faces
and wings, joined by floral festoons.

plate 8.

Marks: the mark of Nuremberg and the mark of the maker, Hans Petzolt, who was born in
1551, became master in 1578, and died in 1633, (N° 3133 in Rosenberg’s Der Gold-
