(i and 3) FOUR SMALL CUPS, SILVER GILT

TL PAIR of the variety of small cups known as Haufebecher in Germany. On the lip is a
frieze of flat strapwork and foliage in relief, between two narrow mouldings. En-
J graved on the body are strapwork and arabesques. A short stem, with ovolc
V work, separates the body from the low foot, which is decorated with foliage in

relief.
Height, 8 cm.
Marks: the mark of Nuremberg, and the mark of the maker, Christoph Lindenberger,
who was master in 1546, and died after 1573, (N° 3101m Rosenberg’s Der Goldsch-
miedeMerkzeichen, 2nd edition. 1911).
German (Nuremberg), circa 1560.

A cup of the same type, by the same maker, is in the Schongauer museum at Colmar. Another,
dated 1582, was sold in the duke of Cambridge’s sale in 1904 for £200.

(3) A third cup, with a frieze of pastoral scenes in relief, between narrow mouldings, the lower
part of the body being engraved with scrolled ornaments and foliage. A short stem of ovolo
work separates the body from the foot, which is decorated with signs of the Zodiac in relief in
oval strap frames. Under the foot are two shields of arms of the Nuremberg families of Fiirleger
and Fermberger, originally enamelled, and the initials p.h.m.f. with the date 1599.

Marks: the mark of Nuremberg and the mark of the maker, Thomas Stoer, ^5 (N° 3163 in
Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 2nd edition, 1911).

(4) A cup of the same type, with a frieze representing a corn harvest and a stag hunt, in relief,
between two narrow mouldings, below which are engraved scrolled ornaments. A short stem of
ovolo work separates the body from the low foot, which is decorated with ovolo work in relief.
Height, 9 cm.
Marks: the mark of Nuremberg and the mark of the maker, perhaps Heinrich Straub, who was
master in 1608, and died probably in 1636, (N° 3189 in Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede
Merkzeichen, 2nd edition, 1911).
German (Nuremberg), circa 161 5.

A pine cup by this maker was in the collection of the late baron Nathaniel von Rothschild of
Vienna.
