A VERY LARGE CARVED IVORY, MOUNTED IN
SILVER GILT

BOLDLY and finely carved on the body are numerous animals, and on the stem a bull,
a lion and monster fighting, a crocodile and marine monsters. The top is missing.
The lip is carved with the following inscription, done in the year 1700:
REQVIESCITE IN PACE O CINIRES CLARIS MDCC

The wide silver-gilt base is boldly embossed with large masks.
Total height, 53 cm.; the base is 30 cm. 5 long and 25 cm. 5 wide; the horn is 46 cm. long.
Marks: the mark of Strassburg and the mark of the maker, Hans Jacob Erhart, who became
master in 1634, H (N° 3550 in Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 2nd edition,
1911).
