A LARGE CUP AND COVER, SILVER GILT
SURMOUNTING the cover is a figure of a warrior in Roman dress with a spear and a
shield, which stands on a reel-shaped pedestal with three scrolled supports, on a drum
base decorated with Venus and Adonis. On the top of the low cover are three strapwork
panels containing landscapes, separated by bold human masks, all in relief, the edge of
the cover being an ovolo decoration. The lip and the base of the deep beaker-shaped body are
plain, while the body is decorated with Scriptural subjects, including Daniel in the lions’ den.
The baluster stem is decorated with oval ornaments and fruit, and is joined to the body by
three scrolled supports. The high base is ornamented with clusters of fruit and scrolled strapwork.
The cover belongs to another cup.
Total height, 53 cm.
Marks: on the cover, the mark of Nuremberg; on the cup, the mark of Augsburg; the mark
of an unknown maker, A.B. in a monogram in a shaped shield; and a Dutch control mark.

A VERY LARGE CUP, SILVER GILT

IN the middle of the beaker-shaped body are three large strap panels, one containing a land-
scape and the others seascapes, with various animals in the foreground, goats, camels, lions,
a monkey, a unicorn and stag, all in relief. The lip and the base are plain, while the body
is embossed with three large fluted vases containing various flowers, and clusters of fruit and
scrolled strapwork on a matted surface.Thetall plain stem is separated by a compressed knop,
which is enriched with fruit and diamond-shaped ornaments. The upper part of the base is
decorated with fruit, scrolled strapwork and scallops in relief, and the lower part with cornu-
copia and other ornaments.
This cup is illustrated in Luthmer’s catalogue of the late baron Carl von Rothschild’s collection,
1885, Vol. II, plate 20.

Marks: the pine-cone of Augsburg and the mark of an unknown maker (N° 233 in
Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 2nd edition, 1911).

Among the pieces of work by this unknown Augsburg silversmith is a double cup in baron
Ferdinand de Rothschild’s bequest to the British museum, which is illustrated in the catalogue,
1902, N° 109, plate XXV. There are also five tazze in the Pitti palace at Florence.
