A LARGE HORN, MOUNTED IN SILVER GILT

LARGE Gothic finial of foliage springs from the cover of eight twisted lobes, which
/ \ has a border of pierced quatrefoils. Under the edge are eight plain lobes, below
/ % which is a band of three scrolls and rosettes in relief, and a corded moulding and
/ V, a cresting. The horn is held by four narrow straps with scalloped edges, which are
joined to a wide band with flat scrolls and one rosette, and with corded and crested edgings.
At the end is a figure of St Sebastian in a Gothic niche. The horn is supported on two birds’
claw feet.
Suspended from a lion’s mask on the lip is a large shield, enamelled in red, with a bear holding
the letter W in its right paw, and dated 1602. The arms on this shield are perhaps those of the
Canton of Appenzell in Switzerland. On the back of the shield is engraved:
