A SMALL CUP, SILVER GILT
ON the plain curved body are three circular medallions with dark blue enamelled back-
grounds, and four enamelled ornaments. Below these is a narrow moulding with a
cresting, the lower part of the body being decorated with bold medallions of masks
and festoons in high relief. The baluster stem is decorated with lions’ masks and fes-
toons, and stands on a pedestal with fruit and straps on the top. The border of the pedestal is
plain.
The stem is not original.
Height, 14 cm.

1 SMALL ship on four wheels, embossed with dolphins swimming in the sea. In front is
1 a spout, and at the back a scrolled bracket with a dolphin thereon,while four silver
/ \ rosettes are applied to the sides. The sail is enamelled,as are also the nine men in the
JL Ik ship.
Height, 19 cm.
Marks: the mark of Nuremberg and the mark of the maker, perhaps Esaias zur Linden, who was
master in 1609. ^ (N° 3191 in Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 2nd edition,

This mark is found on several ships, from which it may be inferred that Esaias zur Linden, whose
mark it is presumed to be, was a popular maker of this variety of vessel or ornament for the
table. This piece is one of two ships by the same maker, in the late baron Carl von Rothschild’s
collection. The other ship is illustrated in Luthmer’s catalogue of that collection, Vol. I, plate

ENGRAVED on the bell-shaped bowl are two scenes in foliated frames, representing a
feast in the open, and a gathering of peasants. A beading joins the bowl to the stem,
which has four beaded and scrolled brackets. The stem rests on a low circular foot en-
graved with two cherubs’ faces and tulips.
