AN OSTRICH-EGG CUP, SILVER GILT
URMOUNTING the cover is a tall turned finial on a reel-shaped pedestal with rayed
top, which rests on a mount chased with arabesque work. The piece of egg in the cover
is cracked. The lip is decorated with arabesque and strapwork in flat relief; below the lip
is a mount decorated with strapwork and fruit and with an inverted cresting. The egg is
held by three straps, of ovolo and cresting, joined at the top and bottom to bold masks; the
lower mount is decorated with festoons and large fruit on a matted surface. At the top of the
vase-shaped stem are three terminal figure brackets, the stem being ornamented with bold masks
and scutcheons. The stem is supported on a reel-shaped pedestal, rayed on top and decorated
at the side with masks and fruit in relief. On the top of the base are three bold masks and strap-
work scutcheons, the border being decorated with arabesques and strapwork.

A CUP AND COVER, SILVER GILT
HE body of the cup is of ruby-coloured glass, engraved with an amorino, vines, and
flowers. The borders of the cover, the top and border of the base are spirally fluted.
A lion rampant, holding a spear, surmounts the cover. Four open scrolled and
foliated ornaments are suspended from the lip. The glass body is held by four flat
straps with cut foliage edges, joined to mounts with similar edges on the top and bottom of the
body. A figure of Atlas supports the cup.
Engraved inside the cover is a large double monogram formed of the initials, J. or T.M.G.
Total height, 3 3 cm.
The only mark, which is repeated twice, is that of an unknown maker
