A SHELL-SHAPED CUP, PARCEL GILT

ON the top is a shell resting on foliage and shells on a reel-shaped pedestal. The cover
is repousse with tritons and sea monsters. The body is shell-shaped and is supported
by a stem in the form of three caryatides and three terminal figure brackets, the stem
resting on a shell. This stands on a circular base, with shells applied, and repousse
with masks and cupids on cornucopiae.
The weight, price and date are engraved on the bottom:
WIGT XXXVII. LOT . EIN . LOT . VM. XVIII . BACZEN . I 57 2 .IAR.
A shield of arms is enamelled inside the cover.
This shell is illustrated in Luthmer’s catalogue of the late baron Carl von Rothschild’s collec-
tion, 1885, Vol. I, plate 38.

A TANKARD, PARCEL GILT
FINIAL of a Roman warrior on horseback surmounts the cover, which is embossed on
/ \ the top with large foliage. Affixed on the border of the cover are birds and flowers, the
t V edge being scalloped. Inside the cover is a medallion of Cimon receiving nourish-
JL ment from the breast of his daughter Pero. The plain lip is inscribed: herculis hic
VIRTUS : MONSTROS.E TULLIA FAIVLE ET RARA JENEJE GRATIA NOMEN HABET. The body is embossed with
three panels representing the labours of Hercules, Tullia in her chariot and iEneas carrying his
father Anchises. Above and below these scenes is a corded moulding. The top of the plain
curved base is inscribed :
Anchisen muss der Sohn auss Troja Flammen heben
Aeneas also hier mitt Lob im Silber leben
Wer so wie Hercules die Feinde Kan erlegen
Den last die spathe Welt in Gold und Silber pragen
Weil Vatter Servius von Tullien Zerfahren
Drumb lebt die Laster That hier nach viel hundert Jahren.
On the border of the base are affixed three amorini on flowers, three birds, and embossed fruit.
The handle is a terminal figure and foliage.
The foot underneath is inscribed:
So offt mit Kuhlen Wein die Kanne man wird heben
Soli Herr Sebastian in lieb und lobe leben, 1697.
