A SMALL BOWL AND COVER, SILVER GILT
THE bowl is oCtagonal in form, the top being enamelled with a shield of arms with
this inscription: m. iohannes nitanivs marina beiers seRgec. Four heads of children are
applied on the cover, which is engraved with panels of figures and inscribed with
the names, Mars, Jupiter, Saturnus, Luna,1^ j Venus, and Sol, the eighth panel
being engraved with conventional symbols of the winds, but not inscribed. Inside the middle
of the cover is engraved a bunch of fruit. The bowl is engraved with oval and foliated panels of
symbolical figures of the eight cardinal virtues, inscribed, Pax, Prudentia, Fortitudo, Temper-
antia, Spes, Caritas, Justitia and Fides. The two flat openwork handles are decorated with
figures of Charity and Justice with angels, supported by scrolled dragon brackets. The short
stem is decorated with an open band of scrolls and animals and is affixed by eight scrolled
brackets. On the foot are cherubs’ faces, fruit and snails on festoons, in relief.

A SMALL TANKARD, PARCEL GILT
ON the top of the cover is a large medallion of a female bust in high relief, the border
being embossed with vines. The lip is plain, while applied to the cylindrical drum
of the body is a wide band embossed with figures of Mars Silvanus and Mars Gradi-
vus. In front is an embossed shield of arms of von Seitz of Swabia, with the initials
m.r.v.a.g.v.s. above the arms, and the date, 1690, below. The handle is scrolled and foliated,
and the thumbpiece is foliated. A decoration of vines, similar to that on the cover, is on the
base.
Height, 15 cm.
Marks: the pine-cone of Augsburg and the mark of the maker, Johann Andreas Thelot, who
was born in 1654 and died in 17 34 9 (N° 477 in Rosenberg’s Der Goldschmiede Merk-
zeichen, 2nd edition, 1911).
