264aFLORIO (J.) Queen Anna’s New World of Words : or Dictionarie of the
Italian and English Tongues. £15
London, M. Bradwood (& W. Stansby) for E. Blount and W. Barret, 1611
Sm. fol., orig. rough calf, crease in corner of title, small piece of blank margin off one leaf,
a fine clean and large copy : vellum guards from a 13th cent. MS. on vellum with portions
of large painted initials ; early ownership, Gaspar Bellero. Good impression of the fine por-
trait of Florio by W. Hole, stated to be the 1st appearance of the only known engraving of
Florio, here faces p. 1 : woodcut border to title. Dedications in Italian and English (differ-
ent).to Queen Anne of Denmark (to whom the author was Reader of the Italian) ; the latter
runs — “ This braine-babe...with a travellers minde, as erst Colombus at command of glorious
Isabella, it hath (at home) discovered neere half a new world : and therefore as of olde some
called Scotia of Scota, and others lately Virginia ” &c. This reference to the New World thus
explains the title. Prel. verses by “ Il Candido ” [=Matt. Gwinne], Sam. Daniel, Alb. Gentili
and others ; long list of authors drawn upon. The Dictionary, useful for its obsolete expres-
sions, has special types for indicating pronunciation. The “ Necessary Rules,” at end, though
included in quiring, have a separate title with the imprint of W. Stansby for the same pub-
lishers. B.M. Cat. 637 (2 copies, one wanting portr.). Sayle 3374 (U.L. Cambr. copy wants
portr.). Hazlitt II. 223. This 2nd ed. contains very many words not in that of 1598. Lee’s
Catal. of Shakesp. 320. Copy recently priced £23.
