In the palace the first act of the
Coronation ceremonies was accomplished
in the raising of the King-elect on to the
King’s bench. The clergy, having come
from the Abbey bearing relics and the
regalia of St. Edward, the coronation

procession then returned to the church
along a prepared course.
The name Westminster makes it
evident that the monastery preceded the
palace, and the latter occupied a site poor
and narrow, squeezed in between the
Abbey buildings and the river. How-
ever, it seems to have been Edward the
Confessor’s favourite residence, and here
