This book is the resuit of research carried out on the Akhtaia murals between
1985 and 1989. I shouid like to thank ali those who assisted in this by no means easy
work. For three years the History of Art department at Moscow University, where the
Bne traditions of Professor V.N. Lazarev are upheld, made it possible for me to study
this subject, 1 wish to express my especial gratitude to Dr Olga Popova who
supervised my dissertation with unfailing attention and goodwill. My thanks are due
