and Eastern Europe (Prof. Mole) and Chair of
History and Theory of Music (Prof. Stefania
Łobaczewska).
24 June - On the basis of the existing academic
achievements and the history of his didactic work,
Dr. L. Kalinowski was nominated associate
professor.
12-18 September - Prof. Mole took part in the XVIII
International Congress of Art History in Venice
delivering a paper entitled Entre Venise et Byzance.
December - Under the supervision of senior librarian of
the Jagiellonian Library Anna Jałbrzykowska M.A.,
volunteer librarian Teresa Witkowska-Zychie-
wicz M.A., commenced work on a new alphabetic
catalogue of the Library of the Complex of Chairs.
1956
26 April - The Council of the Philosophical-Historical
Faculty applied to the Ministry of Higher Education
for permission to create three chairs of art history,
in place of the existing two, namely: the Chair of
Mediaeval Art History (Prof. Mole), the Chair of
Early Modern Art History (Prof. Bochnak) and the
Chair of Modern and Contemporary Art History
(Prof. Dobrowolski).
29 October - Prof. Bochnak was elected Deputy Rector
of the Jagiellonian University; he held this post
until 30 September 1959.
30 October - In accordance with the decisions reached
on 26 April, the Institute of Art History was created;
Prof. Mole became Head of the Institute, whereas
Prof. Bochnak became his deputy; Ass. Prof. L.
Kalinowski became academic secretary.
15 December - Jan Samek M.A. obtained the post of an
assistant.
1957
25 April - At the dean’s motion, the Council of the
Philosophical-Historical Faculty passed a resolution
in the effect of which separate departments were
created within the chairs in the Institute of Art
History, namely: the Department of Mediaeval Art
History which was made up of associate professor L.
Kalinowski and senior assistant Maślińska-Nowa-
kowa M.A., the Department of Early Modern Art
History which was made up of Prof. Estreicher and
Prof. Szabłowski, adjunct professor Dr. Lepiarczyk,
senior assistant Juliusz Ross M.A., Jan Samek M.A.,
and the Department of Modern and Contemporary
Art History consisting of adjunct professor Wanda
Altendorf M.A.
1 July - T. Witkowska-Zychiewicz was employed as
a librarian on the post of scientific-technical
assistant.
1 October - Prof. Bochnak became director of the
National Museum. He held this post until 31
August 1962.

1958
8-13 September - Prof. Mole and Ass. Professor L.
Kalinowski participated in the XIX International
Congress of Art History in Paris delivering the
following papers: Mole-Dewcproblemes concemant
les relations entre France et le Sud-Est europeen dans
la domaine de Vartpreroman, Kalinowski - Influence
de l 'art franęais sur la sculpture medievale en Pologne.
Ass. Professor L. Kalinowski started research on the
Polish section of the Corpus of Medieval Stained-
Glass Windows (Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi;
CVMA).
1959
10 April - At the motion of Prof. Bochnak, the Council
of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty unanimously
passed a resolution whereby extramural studies
were abolished in the Department of Art History.
1 October - Prof. Bochnak was elected dean of studies at
the Philosophical-Historical Faculty. He held this
post until 30 September 1961.
1960
2 September - University Senate entrusted Prof.
Bochnak with the care and supervision of the Chair
of Pedagogy together with the Department.
9 September - In connection with the fact that Prof.
Mole had reached retirement age, the rector
requested Ass. Prof. L. Kalinowski to take tempo-
rary charge of the Chair of Mediaeval Art History
and Department as of 30 September 1960.
23 September - Prof. Mole made a motion to the Council
of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty, requesting
that Ass. Prof. Kalinowski should be appointed to
the Chair of Mediaeval Art History together with
the Department, while Prof. Bochnak should be
appointed director of the Institute. The motion was
passed by a majority of votes.
30 September - Prof. Mole went into retirement.
1 October - Klementyna Żurowska M.A. obtained the
post of senior assistant in the Chair of Mediaeval
Art History, in place of Zofia Maślińska-Nowako-
wa M.A. who had moved to Katowice.
11 November - At the motion of Prof. Bochnak, the dean
of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty, the Uni-
versity Senate nominated Ass. Prof. Kalinowski to
the post of Head of the Chair of Mediaeval Art
History.
1 December - Prof. Bochnak became director of the
Institute of Art History.
1961
Under the supervision of Dr. Kalinowski, the Chair of
Mediaeval Art History undertook research and
excavation work in the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec.
3 February - Within the scheme of the Jagiellonian
University Academic Publications, there appeared
Prace z historii sztuki [Art History Papers] whose
editor-in-chief was Dr. Kalinowski.
