This biographical sketch of Mariette Pacha is not
exhaustive, but contains only a reference to the
valuable work he accomplished for Egyptology.
Born on the 11th of February, 1821, at Boulogne
on the sea, at twenty years of age he was graduated
from, and was professor in the college of his native
town. He seemed to have developed no predilec-
tion for any one science, but first tried painting,
then journalism, became the chief editor of a local
journal, wrote of current events, then composed
romances, humorous feuilletons, and between times
turned his attention to some questions of provin-
cial archaeology. The only literary production of
that early time is a pamphlet on the position of
fortius Itius, which bears the marks of those very
qualities which afterwards made him celebrated:
viz., skill in discussion, great clearness and vigor
of style, and keen penetration.
. After the death, in 1848, of the celebrated en-
graver, M. Vivant Denon, who had done some
excellent work in Egypt from the beginning of the
French occupation, his modest collection of antiq-
uities was sent to Boulogne, and was exposed
in the office of the mayor of the city. Mariette's
