which was there before has been taken away on
account of not being in a good light.
Likewise in oil, in the bed chamber of the
King, is the famous Descent srom the Cross, a
piece of more than twelve geometrical feet in
height, and wide in proportion in figures as large
as nature. In the Superior part there is likewise
another painting on wood, representing the Fa-
ther Eternal, with the Holy Ghost and various
Angels.
In the same chamber over the doors are four
subje&s upon the Passion ; that is, the Prayer in
the Garden, the Flagellation, the Crucifixion,
and the Apparition to Mary Magdalen after the
Resurre&ion,
In the same apartments are two other sinal!
paintings, one of the young Saint John (which
he did in Spain) and another as companion
of Mary Magdalen, which he sent from
Rome; they are a foot; and a hals in height^
and one in breadth.
Another painting is of the Conception, less
than three seet high, and two seet in breadth;
and another os Saint Anthony of Padua, nearly
of equal fize, which his Majesty always took
with him when he travelled.
In the Gallery which leads to the Chamber
of his Majesty, is the Madonna and Child, Saint
Joseph, and Saint John, the height os six feet,
and four in breadth; being the sirst painting
which Mengs painted in oil at Madrid.
The Nativity of Christ in oil colours, taken, as
it is said from the Oratorio, is removed to the
