of a library; but when it was finished, he assigned it to the chamber
of accounts*).

On the second floor there were to be found, in 1671, front-
ing the building of Frederic IV., the wardrobe and the antichamber
of Charles Lewis , and fronting the east, the common dining- and
knights' hall, from which one descended, by the stairs, to the large
hall, the present knights' hall (Rittersaal),**) The remaining sto-
ries , mostly communicating with the octagon tower, probably were
still occupied, at that time, by the chancery and the servants of
the court. The second gallery, communicating with the apart-
ments of Charles Lewis, or a spot very near it, probably is the
identical one , where the consort of Charles Lewis intended to shoot
lady Degenfeld, as she was coming from the dining hall, attended
by the elector, which attempt was, however, frustrated by one
of the lords of the bedchamber, who snatched the pistol out of
her hand. ***)

In the thirty - years' war this building was damaged consider-
ably ; but was repaired by Charles Lewis, who supplied it with
large bowwindows, facing the north, f)

In 1689, the whole building was burnt down by the French,
upon which Charles Philip rebuilt it about the year 1118, adding
the large pillar on the northside, in order to support in some mea-
sure the front which had given way a little, inconsequence of the
effects of the conflagration. In 1764, June 24, Charles Theodor
visited the castle, and resolved to have the building of Otto Henry
fitted up for an occasional residence, but this was not to take place,
the building of Frederic II. being struck by lightning that very

night, when the flames spread so quickly, that the major part of
the castle, and along with it this building, were completely burnt
down and reduced to the present ruinous condition. Only the
dwelling marked a, and the gallery with the stone arches, were
roofed again at a later period. The building a is inhabited by the
cooper to the court, who shows the large tuns, the upper apart-
ments being occupied by Mr. von Graimberg, the editor of the
fine views of the castle engraved by Haldenwang.

built in 1556*), by Otto Henry, on the site of an ancient building
of the first original foundation of the castle, of the ancient wall of
the castle, and of the left wing of the building of Lewis V., which
he ordered to be pulled down, was partly burnt down in the
thirty-years' war in 1633, restored in 1659, by Charles Lewis,
burnt down again by the French in 1689 and 1693, rebuilt by
Charles Philip about the year 1718, a third time burnt down in
the great conflagration of 1764, and about 20 years afterwards,
when the brickvaults were knocked in and all ironwork was
stolen, shamefully ruined and reduced to its present condition.

The greater part of this building, facing the courtyard, un-
doubtedly the finest part of the castle, is built of Heilbronn sand-
stone, and ornamented with the most beautiful sculpture. The
four statues, at the entrance, supporting the superstructure of it,
are of exquisite workmanship. The latter has on a slab the follow-
ing inscription:

OTTO HEINRICH VON GOTTES GNADEN PFALZGRAF
BEIRHEIN, DES HEILIGEjV ROMISCHEN REICHS ERZ-
