Next to the French scholars, who obtained the rewarding task of studying and
preserving Karnak, only one foreign mission was given such a privilege. The go-
vernment of the United Arab Republic granted that distinction to the Polish Center
of Mediterranean Archaeology of the Warsaw University in Cairo. For some years
now, the center has been pursuing research and architectural work connected with
the reconstruction of the temple of Queen Hatshepsut — undoubtedly the most
beautiful Egyptian sacral edifice — in the valley of Deir el-Bahri on the western
bank of the Nile.
