G. MICHELMORE & CO.

138 GODWIN (Francis). Rerum Anglicarum Henrico VIII,
Edwards VI, et Maria Regnantibus Annales. First
Edition. The Author’s own copy, with his Auto. MS.
additions, corrections and 2 genealogical tables, prepared
for the Second Edition (1628), also on the title-page Godwin
has written: “ . . . authore Francisco Godwino . . .” (the
original title-page has no author’s name printed on it).
Folio. Original vellum (Phillipps MSS. 16754). J. Bell,
1616. £24
139 GORDON (General). A.L.s. 3 pp. 8vo. Saubat, 20
Oct. 1876. To Killop. £5, 5s.
Thanking him for “ the trouble he took about the Barrel-organ.”
Asks for the whole of the papers Tomson possesses connected with
my affairs and also certain vouchers “ I sent down in March 1876
for his signature, also £17 which is due to me.” Hopes to come
soon to Cairo and wants to have “ nothing to do with Mr Tomson ”
—who has caused Gordon very much annoyance, so much so
that he has been able to draw only £800 and £600 of what is due
to him and consequently has been forced to borrow in England.
A postscript states: “I am only coming on leave and D.V. shall
return to Nile Province.”
140 GORDON (General). A.L.s. 2 pp. 8vo. Dara Darfour,
3 Aug. 1877. To Dixon. £10, 10s.
It gave him “ the greatest pleasure to hear Mac was with you, for
Thompson’s House with all his kindness is the acme of discomfort
& irregularity.” Mentions Mrs Dixon and the heiress. “ Glad
to hear MacK. is C.B. ... I am now at a great crisis which D.V.
will be over by the time you get this. The slave dealers with
3700 armed slaves are in tacit revolt, and are moving to this. If
I am weak they will attack me and seek to make me prisoner, if
they find I am strong, they will temporize, and try treachery, so
I hope D.V. to open the ball by an attack on their advanced guard.
You see if they do not hesitate to employ treachery, and I do not,
it is too delicate fencing to be pleasant.” Etc. With stamped
ENVELOPE ADDRESSED BY GORDON.
141 GORDON (General). A.L.s. 3 pp. 8vo. Gondolino,
19 Nov. 1874. To MacKillop. £15, 15s.
The boat “ will be a first-rate thing and just what I want. For
the river boats of Baker are very small and hold nothing.” Hopes,
however, to get one up to Dufli or Jhammya “ and the other up
to the Victoria Nile ere very long.” Sorry he had to relinquish
the Cairo Agency but he could not afford it. ‘‘ Watson and
Chippendale are indeed treasures and I owe Stanton a great deal
for getting them sent up, for I never have had such a pool- lot as
