a formal notification of the Queen’s decease, he is to use "all such
expressions of Sorrow & Esteem toward the King of Portugal
and the Queen Dowager as may be proper.”
Paul Methuen, the addressee, was the son of John, Lord Chancellor
of Ireland, who, as Ambassador-extraordinary to Portugal, con-
cluded the famous “ Methuen Treaty ” (1703), by which the woollen
manufactures of England were admitted into Portugal and the
wines of Portugal taxed at one-third less than those of France-
thus Port gradually took the place of Burgundy.

Very neatly written in the Autograph, and Signed, of Thomas Robinson,
Mayor of Sandwich in 1594.
At botton of the First title is the inscription “ Manu Script Thomas
Robinson ” ; this is repeated at the end of the volume, followed
by the interesting note in the hand of Sir Peter Manwood, signed :
“ This booke Mr Thomas Robinson sumtyme mair of Sand witch
and a Juratt there my very good friende gaue me for a legacie,
wch Mr Austyn Lynn his son in lawe dyd carefully sende me, he
wrott itt in his house on St Mary hyll next Billingsgate (in London),
he there left this miserable lyffe for the heavenly the-day of
- 1624.” The Manwoods were a leading family in Sandwich,
and Sir Peter was M.P. for the town in 1588, 1593 and 1597, and
knighted in 1603. He died in 1625. He is known to have been
a patron of letters. John Manwood wrote “ A Treatise of the
Lawes of the Forrest,” published in 1598. This precious Manu-
script PRESENTS A LARGE AMOUNT OF LITERATURE CONTEMPORARY
with Shakespeare, and throws considerable light on many
THOUGHTS AND EXPRESSIONS TO BE FOUND IN HIS PLAYS.
In the MS. of “ The Discourse upon the Tranquility of the Mind ”
(printed in 1592, of which only three copies are recorded in S.T.C.)
