This Important Correspondence is marked “ Private ” and dates
from 5 June 1816 to April 1819. About Government dispatches
and a lieutenant and nine seamen of the Revolutionnaire, obliged
to make Trincomalee; 30 invalids, some women and children of
the 93rd King’s, no orders about Isle of France. Elphinstone is
appointed Commander-in-Chief in India. H.M.S. Magicienne:
advises his arrival at Trincomalee. The Minden, his flagship, will
sail in June from Portsmouth. Admiralty House, Trincomalee,
Commissioner Johnstone’s retirement, regrets the abandonment of
the Bombay establishment. Capt. Hill of the Towey leaves for
the Persian Gulf, to relieve the Challenger. Hopes the Pirates
will be quiet. The Melville is to be floated in Feb. About the
complete loss of the Albion from Bengal. The Minden's delay in
arriving is due to Lord Exmouth being with it. The Pirates of
the Persian Gulf are formidable. Exmouth has brought the Dey
(of Algiers) to a humiliating state, but regrets so many officers of
rank among the wounded. Bad harvest in England. The garrison
at Trincomalee is sickly owing to the vile spirits, which are in
abundance. The expedition against the Pirates in the Persian
Gulf. Great preparations are going ahead in Madras “ for taking
the Field. “Your nephew Skinner is to command the artillery.”
Cannot believe Paget is appointed to Sheerness. Sir R. and
Lady Brownrigg are expected. About China, a good thing for
our commerce, a man of war was there at the time. Success at
Poonah. “ Even Ceylon is not without trouble.” The capture
of Kandia was not popular in England, “ our losses have been
great,” and we can’t catch the Pretender. About Seaton, Master
Shipwright at Bombay, whom the Admiral thinks deranged. Two
or three 28-gun ships are to be built at Cochin. The Dutch
are getting overbearing. The loss of his wife—Lady King, and
his retirement.
Admiral King commanded the Achille at the battle of Trafalgar.
He was Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies from 1816-1820.

This is THE MOST IMPORTANT AND EXTENSIVE CORRESPONDENCE
that has ever been offered—starts in 1859 and finishes in 1867.
It is almost entirely unpublished. Only four of the letters are
published in “Charles Kingsley: His Letters and Memories of his
Life, 1877,” and those only partly. Kingsley refers to his books
