Holograph Letters Signed. Inlaid to Royal 4I0, and hand-
somely bound in blue levant morocco. £275
It is obviously impossible to give a full precis of the contents of
this highly important Correspondence in a Catalogue. Briefly
Ruskin’s Letters describe his visits to the Continent and his
drawing while there. Incidentally he states that: France is
changed to “ degrading ” and “ senseless evil ” ; the Seine
reminds him too much of Turner ; is thankful he is not dead like
poor Keats, Shelley and Byron. Speaks of the intense
resemblance between himself and Rousseau (Jean Jacques) in
mind ; the Franco-Prussian War ; Carlyle ; “In Memoriam ” ;
Louis Philippe. Mentions his Father frequently; “the Author
of ‘ Waverley ’ ” and Lockhart. Refers to “ Lord of the Isles ”
(Scott); Botany; the Scottish aristocracy; Marriage. Quotes
“The Bridal of Triermain.” Mentions Helvellyn; Kingsley;
Titian’s best picture ; the destruction of the Church of St John
and Paul at Venice; Turner’s St Gothard; “ Ethics of the Dust”;
Froude ; Maria Edgeworth; “Seven Lamps of Architecture”;
Reynolds and Gainsborough. Thinks only of his drawings..
Gives his programme for the day while at Abbeville. Men-
tions Allen and Howell; his disappointment with Rose [La
Touche] has ruined his happiness in Society. About the “ restora-
tion” of the Cathedral and destruction of old houses. Adjures
his Mother not to furnish Denmark Hill like Buckingham Palace.
Has bought the porch of the Church of St James—a remnant of
the Gothic—for five pounds. Amiens Cathedral horribly restored.
“ Elements of Drawing.” Has got a small “ Geneva ” by Turner.
“ Weddings are sadder to me than funerals.” “ Political Economy
of Art.” His drawing “ isn’t Turner—and it isn’t Correggio—it
isn’t even Prout—but it isn’t bad.”

The Poet Longfellow and his little daughter came up as he was
drawing at Martigny—some people in England and America
would have liked photographs of the scene. Has been “ reading
