616. Notes on a forged wood Seated Madonna.

This is a figure of oak, 21 inches high. "The oak is old
wood, much worm-eaten in the centre and at the back, showing
here and there definite traces of having been cut after the worm

had finished its work. "The surface of the drapery is, on the
whole, deceptively good. "The whole figure, except the hands and
faces, is covered with small copper nails holding down scraps
of thick gold foil, as if the whole of the drapery had been at one
time covered with it. There are a number of bigger nails of iron
knocked into the upper surface of the base. "The nails on the
drapery purport to outline irregularly shaped patches of gold foil.
