been taken not to damage the figure design and thus seriously to
impair the value of the bowl to a purchaser.

Other forgeries shown me by Pappavangelou were much less
dangerous than this bowl. They included dishes with impossible
combinations of animal and floral designs with naked female figures,
the character of which I can only suggest by saying that they are
akin to designs on music-hall posters or picture postcards of the viler
sort. Forgeries of this kind could of course deceive no one having
any acquaintance with mediaeval art.

I may perhaps mention finally that specimens of Byzantine

pottery of a suspicious nature were shown me two or three years
ago by M. Orphanides, also of Athens. It has since come to my
knowledge quite accidentally that a London firm of manufacturers
of electric pottery kilns has recently received an order for a kiln
from this same Orphanides. The purpose for which the kiln was
required is sufficiently obvious. : B. Rackham.

Herrn Marvin Chauncey Ross schickt mir einen Aufsatz über
‚Early Restaurations of mediaeval Enamels’”’, der in den Technical
Studies, Vol. II, Nr. 3, January 1934 erschienen ist. Der Aufsatz
befaßt sich mit einer Broschüre von P.Thiaucourt „L’Art de restaurer
les Faiences, Porcelaines, Bisquits, Terres-Cuites, Gres, Emaux,
