examination the drawing of the face is distinctly different in
character to the similar work on the Castellani medallion and does
not inspire confidence. The turned edges at the back are extremely
sharp and even if the medallion had been buried almost immediately
after it had been made it is di{ficult to believe that they would not
show some signs of wear. Dr. Bonessi claims that he dug up the
medallion himself, together with various remains of Lombard
armour, in the neighbourhood of Benevento. He began by asking
a very large price for it, but immediately reduced this by more
than half when told that it was in our opinion excessive. After
careful examination of the medallion, however, we came to the
conclusion that it was of at least doubtful authenticity. If it is (as
