This book is the result of an International Conference organized by the Institute of
Archaeology of the Warsaw University, the Warsaw Branch of the Society of Art Historians and the
Royal Castle, Warsaw in May 1999. Neither the conference, nor the publication of this volume would
have been possible without the help and financial assistance of the following Institutions: the State
Committee of Scientific Research (Komitet Badan Naukowych), the Management of the Society of Art
Historians (Zarzqd Glowny Stowarzyszenia Historykow Sztuki), several Antique-dealers in Warsaw,
and, above all the Institute of Archaeology of the Warsaw University. Many institutions, including the
Royal Castles in Cracow and Warsaw, the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Gallery of Art,
Washington D.C, the Berenson Collection at Villa I Tatti, Florence-Settignano, Kunsthistorishes
Institut, Florence generously allowed us to reproduce gratis photographs of artefacts in their possession.
I would also like to express my gratitude to several individuals first of all to Peter Martyn and
Anne-Marie Duk. Peter was responsible for the English language amendments and corrections; in a
way he acted as a co-editor of this volume. Anne-Marie translated a significant portion of both my
introduction and the article. I am very grateful to Fabio Bisogni, Ryszard Bobrow, Fiorella Gioffredi
Superbi, Katarzyna Kozlowska, Anna Mierzejewska, Mieczystaw Morka, Valerio Pacini, Ewa
Staszewska, Alicja Zaras, and particularly to Hubert Kowalski who in many ways helped to organize
the conference and prepare the book being its outcome. It is my great pleasure to thank all the
partecipants of our convegno together with other scholars who have contributed to this book which,
nevertheless, contains merely half of all the papers presented at the symposium. All the materials from
the conference are being prepared for a Polish-language publication edited by Jerzy Miziolek and
Mieczystaw Morka in a volume titled „Falsyfikaty dziel sztuki w zbiorach polskich" (Warszawa,
Argraf2001).
