Summary

The historical experiences uihich separated Kazimierz
Chłędo-ujski from Aleksander Fredro the comedy-ruriter
merę so large that as regards aiuareness, despite a feiu
ideological affinities, they represented tujo entirely diffe-
rent generations in Poland. The events uihich for Fredro
inere either traditions lodged in a not too distant past,
such as the Kościuszko Insurrection against Russia (1794),
or the essential experience of his oum lifetime, such as
being a combatant in the last four of Napoleon's cam-
paigns, for Chłędoiuski merę a remote past, and one that
he tras extremely critical of. A common feature they
shared mas their social background: both came from
the Polish szlachta (gentry), although they differed as
regards financial and personal social status.

Despite the many differences betmeen the great play-
mright mho mas once a deputy to Sejm and pioneered
many nem public projects, and the young lamyer mho
chose to foliom a career in public administration, Chłę-
domski turned out to be a keen and sympathetic critic
of Fredro's mork in literaturę and other fields. He as-
sessed Fredro's achievements from an entirely different
standpoint to the one adopted thirty years earlier by the
Romantic democrats in exile, combatants in the Novem-
ber Insurrection of 1830 against Russia shortly before.
They had rejected Fredro's mork, not finding any values
in it mhatsoever, either in form or in content. Chłędomski
assumed a Positivist approach, applying the mork ethic
of the philosophy to mhich he mas committed and mhich
he endeavoured to put into practice.

He spent several months preparing his essay on Fre-
dro, mhich mas as professional as it mas painstaking.
He considered both the plays composed before Fredros
several years of silence as mell as those mritten after
his return to playmriting; and he also examined Fredro's
other literary forms, both the poetry and the prose. He
