treated the state largely as a source of supplies for the huge army. In fact,

the most important person in the Duchy was the French ambassador in SPIEWY
Warsaw. Significantly, the newly established state lacked its own diplo- HISTORYCZNE
matic representation abroad.
There were some moments of glory of the Polish army under the com-
mand of a new national hero, Prince Jozef Poniatowski, then a marshal
of France. In 1809, in the course of a short war with Austria, the Battle of
Raszyn was won and Poniatowski's forces captured Cracow, Lvov and
much of the areas annexed by Austria in the 18th century partitions. After
the Battle of Wagram, the ensuing Treaty of Schonbrunn allowed sig-
nificantly to expand the Duchy's territory southwards. Prince Poniatowski
and his victorious army were honoured with a triumphal arch erected in

the Square of Three Crosses (fig. 14) in Warsaw. In one of the most fa- wr^*
mous Polish books of the 19th century, Spiewy historyczne [Historical WyciJninto w WAHSZAWIE.X

Poniatowski, who died a hero's death at the Battle of the Nations near
