the gasworks in German, French, and English cities.120 He anticipated the con-
struction of a vertical retort house of the Glover-West system, a separate machinę
room, and a new desulphurization facility. He also planned to build a second
gas plant on the land located by the road towards Zhovkva, near the municipal
slaughterhouse in Gabrielivka, which however was thwarted by the outbreak
of war. These plans were approved for implementation by the Municipal Coucil
in July 1913.121
Jan Rozmus, a construction contractor engaged by the city at that time, was
commissioned to erect a new desulphurization facility, a machinę room, and
a kiln “in the same way and from the same materiał as the existing gasworks
buildings”.122 The desulphurisation plant designed by the municipal architects
consisted of two hall-shaped buildings, juxtaposed along their long sides. They
were erected from brick on the plan of an elongated rectangle. The hall intended
for the placement of four desulfurization boxes was covered with a steep gable
roof of wood covered with ceramic tiles. The roof was supported on iron truss
girders. The second hall, added from the south, and intended for the regenera-
tion of bog iron ore, was covered with a cheaper, wooden, mono-pitched roof,
supported on four cast-iron pillars. In the external faęades of the desulphuriza-
tion plant, brick faęades divided with fiat lesenes and window openings between
them were repeated. In addition, the same gables were used as in the buildings
of the ammonia water distillery and the water gas plant (see: Drawing 13).
The machinę room was a one-story hall with cellars, madę of bricks and pro-
jected on the plan of an elongated rectangle. It was covered with a roof madę in
the same way as in the buildings erected so far. This hall was interrupted along
the transverse axis with a massive, higher (three-story) avant-corps, covered with
a gable roof. The brick faęades of this building have been clasped on the edges
with fiat lesenes. Pairs of additional pilaster strips were introduced on the ga-
ble walls. Windows of considerable size, enclosed in segments, were madę in
the fields between them. The panels marked with pilaster strips were closed with
a simple cornice, supported on consoles madę of bricks protruding from the face
of the wali. Furthermore, stepped finials were added on the axis of the triangular
peaks (see: Drawing 14).
Municipal architects shaped the faęade of a vertical retort house in a similar
way, with the difference that the pilaster strips between the window axes were
mounted on a pedestal, which constituted the ground floor of the building.
The Southern faęade attracted the most attention, enclosed at the edges in mas-
sive lesenes, collapsed at the top, following the triangular outline of the gable,
thus creating a kind of frame for the entire faęade. Three arcades were inserted
within it. The two extreme sets of arcades were lower and narrower, while
the middle one was wider and overlapping the gable of the faęade. In the pan-
els designated by the arcades, window openings were madę on several levels.
