EXPLANATION OF THE TABLES. 129
R The anterior part of the diaphragm fixed to the ribs as well as to the
anterior sternum.
■v
S The poslerior part of the diaphragm fixed to the pofterior fternum only;
T Fig. I. Lungs which consist os sour lobes, on the right side Os the heart.
U Fig. I. Lungs consisting os two lobes on the left side^ os the heart.
These are separated srom each other in the usual way by the mediafti-
num.
X The larynx and trachea srom it sor conducting the air into the lungs T
and U. The whole os the larynx is open towards the pharynx.
VW Fig. II. Lungs, consisting each os two lobes, placed at the sides of
the oesophagus I, srom which their tracheae are sent oss, represented at
the letter Y.
The lungs VW are in one cavity, sormed by a pofterior membrane Or"
pleura. This cavity is divided srom the two anterior cavities of the tho-
rax by the intervention os the pofterior pleura, connected to the anterior
pleurae by cellular membranes. But, as the pofterior part os the dia-
phragm S is connected to the pofterior fternum only, and not to the po-
sterior ribs, the posterior cavity os the thorax communicates with the
cavity os the abdomen at ZZ, on each fide of S.
Both bodies are supplied with blood srom one heart.
Two inferior venae cavae, joined with the superior cava, terminate in
one auricle a.
h Is the right ventricle.
c The pulmonary artery which sends arteries to the sour lungs,
d The lest auricle. *
e The point os the lest ventricle, srom which one aorta is sent Out, which
foon divides intoy and g, right and left aortae proper to each body, srom
the arches os which the ascending branches are Tent oss*
The canalts arteriosus ends in the lest aortag.
The umbilical cords, sormed as in two distind soetuses, are contiguous at
/>, or seem to sorm one common cord; and as there is but one liver, it
is probable that the umbilical veins united within the body*
