above enumerated, there are also instances os
internal protrusions, which, though not coming
under the general definition os hernia, yet, srom
their analogy to this disease, deferve to be taken
notice of, when treating os this fubject.
A part of the inteftine, generally a part os
the great arch of the colon, has been obferved
to pass through an aperture in the diaphragm.
This unnatural appearance was probably the
consequence os original malconsormation, as
the sides os the aperture were sound persectly
smooth, which could not have been the cafe,
had it been the confequence of rupture, srom
violent muscular exertion. Such apertures have
been discovered in persons os different ages,
who generally died in consequence of strangu-
lation of that part of the colon, which pasTed
through the diaphragm, or in consequence os
the difpiaced bowel impeding the sree action os
the heart and lungs.
Such a lufus natures in the diaphragm was
sent to my father, by Dr Paterson, with a letter
