being here supported by a tendinous covering,
gradually gives way to the weight of the bow-
els ; one portion dragging another after it,
until at lasfc the tumour has been found to
contain a large mare of the moveable part of
the alimentary canal, and to hang down near-
ly to the patient's knees, notwithstanding
which, he often enjoys a tolerable mare of
health.
From the above description of the situation,
size, and coverings of the crural hernia, it is
obvious, that a surgeon will find much more
difficulty in discovering the nature of this dis-
ease, and of ascertaining the contents of the
tumour, than in scrotal hernia ; and that the
diagnostic in this hernia mud be more diffi-
cult, as it may readily be mistaken, in its be-
ginning, for an enlargement of one or more
of the neighbouring lymphatic glands, or for
a collection of matter pusiling downwards
from a lumbar abcess.
