3. Rough BrW. vase. H. 14.5, D. 8.5 cm. Figure 28 I 3. UCLMA 6-3109-3111.
Child of ca. 1 year buried in a “magur” or inverted pottery jar. The bottom of the grave had
first been covered with matting (Type I, crosswise) which ran up the sides of the grave for about
15 cm. on either side outside the “magur” (shown on Figure 28 k). The “magur” was simply a
large open-mouthed jar of rough BrW. from which the bottom had been broken out, placed
mouth down over the burial. The bottom had been broken out irregularly and after the burial
the opening had been sealed by the bottom of a similar but slightly larger jar, cemented on with
black Nile mud, Figure 28 i. The jar had been distorted in baking, the opening being almost oval,
67 X 55 cm. Its height was ca. 50 cm., D. at bottom ca. 33 cm., thickness at mouth 1.5 cm. About
1 cm. from the broken edge of the bottom a series of small holes had been bored on two opposite
sides, two on one side and three on the other, as if for a cord to be passed through, probably for
repairing the jar. But they were now covered by the Nile mud sealing and served no purpose.
The burial was contracted on left side, left arm extended straight down to knees, and was laid
on the under matting but was not covered by any upper matting. Remains of clothing under
head and shoulders — a single finely woven linen garment.
