afterwards, and hurried on, and reached the boat.
They had been waiting 30 minutes for us! the boxes
were bundled in, and those left behind came just as
we were starting. Thank goodness we were past
Antwerp, and going down the river at a good speed.
We had a beautiful passage over and arrived in
Harwich an hour before our time. I cannot conclude
this article without mentioning how exceedingly well
Mr. Liebich carried out the arrangements of the
journey; indeed, I don't believe, that with any other
master we should have left Antwerp that night.

Donkeys.

The horse is a noble animal, but in my eyes it
is nothing when compared to its brother quadruped
the ass. The donkey possesses all the noble qualities
of the former and, besides that, it is blest with indo-
mitable determination or obstinacy as some would
call it. But it is not to discuss merely on the merits
and faults of the ass that I write this; but to tell
of my experiences and sufferings from that noble
beast. I remember, when I was but a small boy, my
parents presented me with a donkej' as a birthday
present. I remember with what rapture and joy I
gazed upon that donkey when I first saw it, and
how carefully I assisted to rub it down and bring
it its oats, I also remember how, when I first tried
to mount the brute, he pitched me and having cut
my head open and bruised my body by sundry kicks,
quietly returned to its stable, and when I rose
with feelings of wrath and indignation I found the
animal in the harness room eating up the coachman's
top-hat while the remains of gloves, jack boots etc.
lay scattered about the floor. After this episode in
my donkeys career, it was turned loose in a field,
while I was quite at a loss what to do with it.
At last a brilliant idea struck me: why not buy a
cart? No sooner said than done, and after having
