DEE NEUENHEIMEE.

"Maruca."

I.

The heat was appaling! Santa Cruz de Tenerife was
deserted and hardly a soul was to be seen in the streets. The
orderly officer lay back in his chair and lazily puffed his
cigarette. The prisioner before him looked sulky and
inclined to be violent. " Selling your rations, eh ?—two
weeks' cells will teach you not to disobey my orders another
time, amigo mio ! Take him away and let him cool himself
if he can in this heat—march ! "

The speaker threw away his cigarette, and deftly rolling
another proceeded to light it. " Two weeks was too little for
that brute," murmured he. '.' Por Dios, the look he gave me
had murder in it."

The room lay flooded in moonlight. On the bed reposed
a man in deep slumber. The soldier crept on his hands and
knees till he reached the bed, and then stood up. Out of his
pocket he drew a long iron nail and a hammer. Taking one
look round the room, he stooped over the slumbering officer
and putting the point of the nail to his temples drove it
home with two sharp strokes of the hammer, which he
dropped in his hurry, and disappeared through the window.

He sped up the street leading towards the top of the
town. Turning off to the left he began to ascend the
mountain path and followed the water course. Fear of
detection gave wings to his feet, and what would have taken
him two hours to do, took him little more than one this night.

He climbed on up the mountain side until he reached a
large cave, where he fell exhausted. A girl rose and came
and put her arms round him—"Have you done it?" she
whispered, " queridissimo, I fear for you," she murmured,
" drink this and you'll be better." He did as she bid him
