OP THE MAUSOLEUM. 243

of these fragments, with a view to re-joining them,
hut with less success than in the case of the statues.
These remains, however, from the excellent concli-'
tion of the surface generally, furnish that evidence;
as to the original execution of the sculpture, which,:
in the case of the slahs from the Castle, has to be;
supplied, for the most part, from slight indications.

It is interesting to observe how uniformly the
same masterly style of modelling is maintained
throughout in these fragments, especially in the
arms and legs. They furnish too additional proof
that the entire frieze related to the same subject;

a different moulding at the foot.

On this slab are three figures and part of a horse.
On the left, a male figure, resembling Herakles in
type, stands in a warlike attitude, looking to the:
left; his right arm is drawn back to hurl some
weapon, probably a spear, at an enemy, who must;
have been represented on the following slab. Be-
hind him, in the centre of the scene, a female figure,
clad in a chiton and peplos, flies to the right,
stretching out at the same time her right hand
