Dear Readers,
io
It is with great pleasure that we present to you Volume XII of Notae Numismaticae
- Zapiski Numizmatyczne. In accordance with our customary practice, all the texts
concerned with subjects of international interest or significance have been published
in the Conference languages, while those of more relevance to Polish readers - in
Polish. Information for prospective authors as well as previously published volumes
of our journal can be found at www.mnk.pl.
The present volume of Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne is
dedicated to the memory of Zygmunt Zakrzewski (1867-1951) on the 150th
anniversary of his birthday. Zakrzewski was a chemist, a numismatist, a professor
of medieval numismatics at the University of Poznań and the Jagiellonian University,
a member of the Numismatic Society in Krakow, a co-founder of the Numismatic
Society in Poznań, and the editor-in-chief of the Numismatic and Archaeological
Review between the years 1924-1927. Yet he was primarily an eminent collector,
the creator of one of the best collections of medieval coinage in Poland. In accordance
with his will, this collection (numbering more than 5,000 pieces) was donated to
the National Museum in Krakow in 1960 by his daughter Jadwiga Zakrzewska-
-Kleczkowska and her husband Andrzej Kleczkowski. As a result of this outstanding
and generous gift, the National Museum in Krakow is now recognized as having
the most comprehensive collection of Polish coins and medals.
