STEFAN SKOWRONEK

Cross of Merit, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and the Medal
of the National Education Commission.
Prof. Skowronek not only promoted knowledge about ancient numismatics
by delivering lectures for the general public but also taught students at both
the Pedagogical and Jagiellonian universities. History students at the Jagiellonian
University had the opportunity to listen to his excellent lectures on the subject
of ancient numismatics, and from 1956 to the 1990s, so too did the university’s
archaeology students, including the author of this In Memoriam. Delivering his
lectures with great enthusiasm, Prof. Skowronek was even able to catch the interest
of those resistant to the charms of ancient coinage.
Prof. Skowronek’s work as a researcher to a large degree concerned numismatics,
although this focus was not exclusive. His research resulted in dozens of published
works, most of which were devoted to issues within numismatics.1 Among
the numerous subjects that he addressed, there were a few that he himself said he
was particularly interested in. In first place was the work that Skowronek did on
the coinage of Roman Egypt. Skowronek devoted a number of published works
to what is called Alexandrian coinage - both monographs and shorter articles.2
Skowronek’s catalogue of Alexandrian coins from the National Museum in
Krakow also reflects this aspect of the professor’s interests.3 Another important
field of research explored by Prof. Skowronek was the coinage of ancient Judaea.
Beginning with the first monograph in Polish on Herod the Great, these works
include his publications on artifacts from the collections of the National Museum
in Krakow, as well as ones that address a number of more general issues concerning
numismatics in ancient Palestine.4 Some of Prof. Skowronek’s works covered
Byzantine coinage.5 Skowronek also published works on numismatic finds made
during Polish archaeological missions in the Mediterranean Basin.6 A few works
also covered finds of ancient coins in the lands of modern-day Poland.7 Among
the works on finds from Poland, Skowronek’s reconstruction and description -
based on Karol Halama’s notes - of the hoard of Roman denarii discovered in
Przewodów is of particular interest.8 Finally, Prof. Skowronek also addressed the way
