with the grape-motif in granulation techniąue [Korośec 1950, 75 f. SI. 110].
Alternativeły, instead of „berries” there can be matching pairs of hollow cones
[Milćev 1966, 335] thus achieving an effect quite resembling category 7 below. In
both cases, the ornaments conceal the soldering between the two wires.

Category 9
This type, quite similar to category 8, displays a tendency towards an anthro-
pomorphic shape [Grigorov mentions a „praying pose”, rpnropoB 1999, 29],
deriving from the morę elaborate forms with „berry” ornaments or granulation.
Unlike them, these earrings are cast as a whole. This category is particularly
frequent south of the Danube, whereas it is very rare to the north, a fact that
stresses the strong Byzantine influence. It has been argued that this form is
the outcome of a slowly deteriorating imitation of the granulated originals
[Thomas 1956, 350].

Category 10
This category also contains generally oval earrings
with a pendant. In this case, the lower part is
covered in granulation. Originally, the main body
is madę of intertwining wires, which were later
provided with rows of tiny granulation pearls
[Thomas 1956, 350], From the overall effect, the
term grape-form or shape is derived [Milćev 1966,
334; Danielczyk 1970, 254], they are also frequent-
ly called Belo Brdo earrings [Korośec 1950, 340].
Masterworks of this style bring us some of the
most beautiful examples of byzantine-inspired
early medieval jewelry, usually madę of gold or
