cards, and it seems that except in Negroes, the two forms of prog-
nathism, visible and measurable, tend to run in inverse ratio in our
series.
One point in this connection must be kept clear. The fact that
cranial and facial bases are equal, does not necessarily imply an absence
of prognathism, because the levelling-up of facial base to cranial base
may itself be due to Negro influence. In none of the various g-oups
compared by Miss Fawcett in her paper on the Naqada crania in
" Biometrika " (Vol. I, Part IV, Aug. 1902) does facial base approach
cranial dimensions, except in modern Negroes. In the other four
groups, all Egyptians (taking males only), the cranial base dimension
exceeds the facial by from 3-48 millimetres to 4-84 millimetres. In the
Nubian type, however, the facial base dimension gives an average
excess of 0-3 millimetre over cranial base, which, while it indicates a
very definite tendency towards prognathism, is still much less than
the mean in modern Negroes, which, according to Miss Fawcett's
figures (quoted from the German anthropological catalogue and
Brocas MSS.) amounts to 2-37 millimetres.
Cemetery 72.
This great cemetery begins close to the temple at Gerf Husein on
the western bank of the river, and extends for about a kilometre south.
It contained over 600 graves, consisting of Christian, Pre-Christian
Nubian (X-group) and Middle Nubian burials.
Early Christian Burials.
Here the bodies were placed in graves of varying types, but most
often the actual burial chamber was a low-roofed mud-cut tomb
opening at the bottom of a long deep grave, the latter being orientated
east and west.
As a rule the bodies were placed on the back, with the hands at the
sides or in front of the pubes and the head west, but some were found
placed in an exactly opposite position.
Amongst the first five bodies taken up, no fewer than four, two males
and two females, were of a type quite distinct from anything met with
hitherto in this year's work. The men had broad, relatively short
cards, and it seems that except in Negroes, the two forms of prog-
nathism, visible and measurable, tend to run in inverse ratio in our
series.
