Celina Styrylska-Taranczewska on the elevation; the terraced
Children’s Hospital in Prokocim (Wladyslaw Poraj-Biernacki);
and the dramatically modelled mass of the Academy of Physical
Education complex (Leszek Filar). Among the most interesting
buildings are also two churches in Nowa Huta: in Bienczyce
(Wojciech Pietrzyk) and in Mistrzejowice (Jozef Dutkiewicz),
with original spatial arrangements and good-quality decoration.
Somewhat paradoxically, the situation changed slightly for the
better in the crisis years of the 1980’s. Many Postmodernist and
Neoconstructivist designs and some actual constructions appear-
ed, programmatically renouncing the architecture in which the
trivialized tradition of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus was married
to the ugliness of prefabrication. The new buildings, with their
innovative textures of material, coloured plaster and free juxta-
position of historical and “modern” architectural motifs, are of
ambiguous value and often found shocking, but they introduce
