Too see the ancient parts of the Wawel architecture, one must
look up. To the left looms the massive northern wing of the Royal
Castle' straight ahead — the picturesque complex of the Cathedral,
the Treasury building and the Sigismund and Clock Towers. On
the square below the Kosciuszko statue, the perspective narrows.
The road turns sharply left and leads through the vaulted Vasa
Gateway, erected by Sigismund III after 1595. Its high arcade
gives a narrow view across to the courtyard, with the Cathedral on
