65. Leonard Marconi, monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko on the so-called
Ladislaus IV’s Bastion, 1921, reconstructed i960
southern curtain wall, constructed by Bartolomeo Berrecci in
1530—1536. The new palace was built in place of earlier, partly
ruined structures. Whenever possible, though, the existing walls
were used, and therefore many earlier relics were preserved in the
new residence. Of special importance was the Gothic castle, whose
remnants defined the basic shape of the courtyard, and the western
and northern wing. The northeastern corner of the Gothic castle,
with the Hen’s Foot and the Danish Tower, has been preserved
almost intact.
As we can see, the essential parts of the Wawel Castle date
from 1502—1536, although some changes were introduced later.
The most significant alterations took place under Sigismund III
