P.OVID'S METAMOR-
Too late fhall find, her {welling Hopes were
vain,
And know, that Rome o'er Memphis Ml muft
reign :
What name I Afric or Nile's hidden Head ?
Far as both Oceans roll, his Power fhall fpread:
All the known Earth to him fhall Homage pay,
And the Seas own his univerfal Sway :
When cruel War no more difturbs Mankind;
To civil Studies fhall he bend his Mind,
With equal Juftice guardian Laws ordain,
And by his great Exemple Vice reftrain:
Where will his Bounty or his Goodnefs end ?
To Times unborn his gen'rous Views extend ,
The Virtues of his Heir our Praife engage,
And promife BlelTings to the coming Age :
Late fhall he in his Kindred Orbs be placed,
With Pylian Years , and crowded Honours
graced.
Mean time , your Hero's fleeting Spirit bear,
Frefh from his Wounds, and change it to a Star :
So fhall great Julius Rites divine aiTume,
And from the Skies eternal frnile on Rome.
This {poke; the Goddefs to the Senate flew:
Where, her fair Form conceal'd from mortal
View,
Her Cxfar's heav'nly Part fhe made her Care,
Nor left the recent Soul to walte to Air:
But bore it upwards to it's native Skies:
Glowing with new-born Fires fhe law it rife j
Forth fpringing from her Bolom up it flew,
And kindling, as it fbar'd, a Comet grew;
Above the Lunar Sphere it took it's Flight,
And fhot behind it a long Trail of Light.
Thus rais'd, his glorious Off-fpring Julius view'd,
Beneficently Great, and lcattering Good ,
Deeds, that his own furpafs'd, with Joy beheld,
And his large Heart dilates to be excell'd.
What tho' this Prince refufes to receive
The Pref'rence, which his jufter Subjects give;
Fame uncontroll'd, that no Reftraint obeys, ^
The Homage, fhunn'd by modeft Virtue, pays, >
And proves difloyal only in his Praife. 3
Tho' great his Sire, him greater we proclaim :
So Atreus yields to Agamemnon's Fame:
Achilles fo fuperior Honours won,
And Peleus muft fubmit to Peleus' Son ;
Examples yet more Noble to difclofe,
So Saturn was eclipfed , when Jove to Empire

Each claims a Monarch's, and a Father's Praife.
Celeftials, who for Rome your Cares employ;
