OBITUARY


Grzegorz Kieferling
1964-2006

Grzegorz Kieferling, archeologist and conservator; member of the Polish archaeological expedition in
Marea in Egypt, passed away unfortunately in 2006. Born in 1964 in Jaroslaw, he came to
Krakow to study at the Civil Engineering Eacuity of the Technical University. His interests devel-
oped in a different direction and three years later he transferred to Jagiellonian University to begin
studying prehistoric archaeology. As a student he began work at the Metal Conservation Lab of the
Archaeological Museum in Krakow, becoming a valued member of various archaeological expeditions
in Poland thanks to his combined skills as archaeologist and metal conservator. His specialty was the
archaeology of the period of Roman influence in Polish territories. A doctoral candidate at
j agiellonian University in 2000-2003, he was practically ready to submit his dissertation at the
time of his premature death.
Grzegorz Kieferling practiced extensively on excavations in Poland and Austria. In 1999 he
embarked his own project of excavations of a Roman-period cemetery in the locality of Radawa. He
