186. Walnut Marriage Chest of Sarah Smedley
Pennsylvania, dated 1737
Oblong top with reeded rear gallery, the front with three small and
four graduated long drawers with moldings overlapping the drawer
frames; stepped valanced apron and bracket feet. Fitted with fine
engraved scrolled brasses and bail handles and inlaid; the central top
drawer with the initials 5 S, the apron and brackets with banding and
date, 1737- Height, 49% inches; width, 41 inches
Note: The chest was part of the wedding furniture of Sarah Smedley in 1737
and descended to ‘a Sarah in each of several generations’ before it was purchased
from the last of them, Mrs Henry M. Jones.
