Banjo-shaped case of mahogany,
the front embellished with gilded
rope pattern molding framing
glass panels; the upper panel
exhibiting the national emblem,
American eagle, shield, and stars
arranged as a cartouche and in-
scribed with the word Patent be-
low the eagle; the lower panel,
fronting the pendulum box, show-
ing the action between the frigates
‘Constitution’ and ‘Guerriere’ in
an oval medallion bordered with
maple leaves and dogwood. Brass-
rimmed circular dial inscribed:
AARON WILLARD, BOSTON. Gilded
finial and bracket base. Very
rare. PI eight, 41 inches

352. Sheraton Inlaid Mahogany and Bird’s-eye Maple Secretary
American, circa 1800
Upper part fitted with shelves, small drawers, and pigeonholes enclosed
by a pair of glazed doors, the lower part of each filled with a panel of
bird’s-eye maple, the upper part with delicate reeded mullions forming
pointed arches. Lower body containing three beaded long drawers,
above which is a hinged writing flap lined with crimson leather. The
shaped pediment ornamented with two turned wood finials and a gilded
bronze eagle. On reeded short legs; has brass carrying handles.
Equipped with interior lighting. Height, 6 feet 7 inches; width, 42 inches
