ON THE DEATH OK TZELEPES.

133

" Stand on thy feet O Tzelepes,
That we the assault may push:

Perhaps the Moslems e'en may dare
From out the house to rush."

The Christians went and buried him

At Sfakia's chief town,
Because e'en sweet as violet's flower

Was Tzelepes' renown.

At length the Moslems ventured forth
As evening's shades drew near,

Nor knew they that the Tzelepes
Was stretched upon his bier.
