Bf. V. 12). Achilles waylaying
Troilos and Polyxena. Signed by Timonidas (in-
scriptions p. 163, no. 14). c. 580 b.c.

AMPHORISKOI

The shape is foreign to the earlier periods. The
majority of the following are dull vases, but the first
is a most unusual piece:

Athens 664. Fig.44g (reproduced from A.M. 1894
pi. 8; C.C. pi. 26 no. 628; Bieber, Theaterwesen 29
fig. 122; Schnabel, Kordax 55; Jahrbuch 1912, 247
fig. 6). Return of Hephaestus; loose dot-rosettes in
field. Finely polished surface. The shape has many
points in common with that of the next, and the two
vases are evidently products of the same workshop:
the aryballoi nos. 803-5 belong to this group. The
date of no. 1073 is probably not much after 600 b.c.
The shape evidently shows the earliest form of
the amphoriskos,1 and the
•■>. style has several archaic

...........•£-••. features—the woman ren-

/ ;' "i /' dered in b.f. technique,

for instance, and the stiff-
jointed 'mule' on which
Hephaestus rides.2 From
Argos (A.Z. 1859 pl-I25>l)-
Known only from Conze's
description. Padded dan-
cers; dot-rosettes.

Perhaps even earlier than
the above, to judge by the
shape, is Oxford 1928. 26.
Upper part modern. 'Subgeometric'
cf. nos. 1355, 1355 a.

1 The tendency, as usual, was to develop
slighter shape; cf. the very late type, fig. 166.
