THE WALL FRESCOES
a traditional personification which we often
find in mediaeval painters, and which dates
from classic times.
Fresco IX.—The Gainsaying of Korah.—
Botticelli.
Here we have Botticelli’s work again, and
he shows us the traitors struck by the hand
of God, with all that picturesque intensity
of which he was master.
In the sixteenth chapter of Numbers we
read how Korah, Dathan, and Abiram
gathered together 250 princes of the
assembly against Moses and Aaron to resist
their authority, and accused them of taking
too much upon themselves, and the answer
of Moses:—
Numb. xvii. 5. . . . To-morrow the Lord will show
who are his, and who is holy. . . .
16. And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all
thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and
Aaron, to-morrow.
17. And take every man his censer, and put incense
in them, and bring ye before the Lord every man his
censer. . .
