Import of Stone and Objects of Art from Gotland and Óland
to the Commonwealth of Two Nations (XIII-2nd Half of the XVIII C.)
The goal of the present paper is to thoroughly systematize the state of knowledge of
the identification, import, and use of ‘Swedish stone’ in small architecture and sculpture
in Royal Prussia and Warmia, as well as in the neighbouring lands of the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. The paper was elaborated on the grounds of a newly isolated group of
modern monuments made from material imported from Gotland and Oland, almost exclu-
sively executed by Netherlandish and German artists affiliated mainly with Gdansk. In the
geographical and statistical perspective this phenomenon had a fundamental impact on the
development of small architecture and stone sculpture in this part of Central Europe in the
12th-18111 c.
All the reddish and greyish Ordovik orthoceras limestone from the Baltic See island
of Oland and the greyish-greenish ąuartz Late Silurian Burgsvik sandstone from nearby
Gotłand meant for use in architectural decoration and figural sculptures reached the Polish-
